AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal on October 8 claimed he would win the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll by a margin of 4-5 lakh votes, saying the result would leave his party celebrating while the BJP and Congress would be disappointed.
“Inshallah, the bypoll result will be in my favour. I will be smiling, and the rest will be crying. But I still want to give my best wishes to the BJP and Congress. Someday, they will win,” Ajmal said while speaking in Nagaon.
Ajmal also took a swipe at the BJP and Congress, claiming that the contest was effectively between AIUDF and two candidates whom he sought to portray as being on the same side.
“Out of the three candidates, Congress' Sibamoni Bora is also a BJP, and another is the BJP candidate itself,” he said.
Ajmal further claimed that he could see only the AIUDF in the ballot or EVM and asserted that the electoral verdict would be decisively in his favour.
“I can see in the ballot or EVM, it is only AIUDF. I will win by a margin of 4-5 lakh votes,” he claimed.
‘Himanta has given up on Nagaon’
Ajmal also claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had given up on the Nagaon seat, without providing evidence for the assertion.
“Himanta Biswa Sarma has given up on Nagaon seat,” Ajmal said.
The AIUDF chief's remarks came two days after polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, which was held on October 6.
The bypoll witnessed a three-way contest involving BJP's Devashish Sharma, Congress' Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
The final outcome will be known when votes are counted on October 9.
