Intern doctors at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital staged a protest on campus after they were allegedly not paid their February stipend despite the state government’s directive to release salaries before Holi.
According to the protesting doctors, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, had earlier directed that the February salaries of government employees be disbursed before February 27 in view of the upcoming festivals.
However, the interns claimed that the order was not implemented in their case.
The protesting junior doctors said that although the principal and superintendent of the medical college had taken steps to ensure the release of the stipend within the stipulated time, negligence by certain staff members resulted in the delay.
As a result, 141 intern doctors engaged in duty at the institution are still awaiting their February stipend.
Demanding immediate payment, the interns organised a protest programme within the medical college premises, expressing frustration over the delay and urging authorities to resolve the issue at the earliest.
