With days still left for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, political momentum is visibly building in Upper Assam. The 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency in Tinsukia district witnessed a massive show of support on March 25 as Jai Bharat Party and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Garnel Minz received a grand welcome in his native village, Madhupur.
Minz, a prominent Adivasi leader, returned to his village after a long gap and was greeted by His supporters, including men, women and youth. Residents from neighbouring villages also gathered in large numbers, turning the occasion into a festive procession marked by traditional Adivasi songs, dances and drumbeats.
The scale of the reception is being seen as politically significant, especially in a constituency where Adivasi voters have historically played a decisive role. Observers believe Minz’s candidature, backed by Jai Bharat Party and JMM, could reshape the electoral contest in Margherita.
Speaking to reporters, Minz said the overwhelming response reflected the people’s desire for change. “The love and blessings of the people give me strength. I will honour their trust and enter the electoral battle with confidence. I am fully confident of victory,” he said.
The Margherita constituency is witnessing a triangular contest this election. Sitting MLA Bhaskar Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking re-election, while Rahul Chetry represents Raijor Dal. Minz’s entry has added a new dimension to the race, particularly given his grassroots connect and appeal among Adivasi communities.
