A newly floated political outfit in Assam, the Jai Bharat Party, has formed its Margherita Constituency Committee and sounded the battle drum for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026.
The committee was formally constituted on March 17, at Borgolai in Tinsukia district under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, which has a significant population of over 42,000 Adivasi and tea tribe voters.
Party leaders alleged that both the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party governments have, over the past 70 years, used Adivasi and tea tribe communities merely as vote banks without addressing their core issues.
The party, formed in 2024 under the leadership and vision of late Pradip Nag, former president of the All Assam Adivasi Students' Association (AASAA), plans to field candidates in around 40 Assembly constituencies across Assam in the upcoming elections.
The Margherita Constituency Committee comprises a 31-member team, with Asap Tirkey as President, Jeevan Xess as General Secretary, Atul Chetia as Vice-President, and Mohammad Abdul Kadir as Organising Secretary.
Meanwhile, Garnel Minj, who recently resigned from his post as General Secretary of the Tinsukia district unit of the All Assam Adivasi Students' Association, has been announced as the party’s candidate from the Margherita constituency.
