209 passengers aboard the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express reached Kamakhya railway station late night on March 31, following a derailment near Nergundi Station in Odisha on March 30.
The incident saw 11 coaches of the 12551 Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derail, resulting in one fatality and eight injuries.
Two individuals from Assam were injured in the SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express derailment, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had confirmed, adding that no casualties were reported from Assam.
On his official X handle, he had provided an update on the incident involving Train 12551, informing that the two injured individuals, Willson Digal from Udalguri and Amiran Nisha from Baksa, have been currently undergoing treatment and are out of danger.
According to Raju Yadav, one of the train staff members, the passengers were in the pantry preparing meals when they heard a loud noise and saw smoke filling the area. "We went out and saw that 11 coaches had derailed. We rescued a few people. Andhra Police, DRM, and the station master reached the spot and provided us with food and water," Yadav recounted.
After several hours, the passengers were provided with a special train to continue their journey. Yadav estimated that 30-40 people may have been injured in the accident. Tragically, one person died after falling into a ditch, and their body was recovered from the site.
The passengers, including Yadav and 208 others, finally made it to their destination in Kamakhya after a difficult ordeal.
