The Kamalabari ferry ghat in Assam's Majuli was relocated on January 12 due to the low water level of the river Brahmaputra. The ghat has been moved to Darbar Chapri, a location slightly ahead of the previous site. The change was necessitated by difficulties in operating the boats, which have been suspended since January 3 due to inadequate water levels.
"We are facing problems to run the boat due to low water levels in the river. We have been halting the boat services from January 3. Because of the low water levels, the passenger boats are unable to move. We are shifting the ghat to Darbaar Chapori for the time being", one local said to IndiaTodayNE.
The new location, Darbaar Chapori, will serve as a temporary point of operation. It's worth noting that frequent instances of ferries being stranded on sandbanks due to abnormal water depletion led to this decision.
The Inland Water Transport Department has also relocated Parghat to ensure smooth passenger movement. Passenger ferries have been operational from the new riverbank since this morning.
