Tension erupted in Abhayapuri in Assam's Bongaigaon district on August 12 over a land dispute after the BJP allegedly began constructing a party office on land that Congress claims was allotted to it for its office in 1992.
The disputed plot, measuring 1 bigha 4 kathas and bearing Dag No. 80/175 at Shivpur in Abhayapuri, was reportedly allotted by the Srijangram Revenue Circle in 1992 in the name of the Congress office.
The situation turned tense when the Abhayapuri Mandal BJP allegedly started construction of its office on the plot. A Congress team led by former MLA Pradip Kumar Sarkar and the Bongaigaon district Congress president reached the spot, removed the BJP banner and put up a Congress flag, following which the construction work was stopped.
Congress leaders have lodged complaints with the concerned authorities and police over the incident.
The party alleged that attempts were being made by a section of land mafias to grab the disputed plot in the name of constructing a BJP office.
Following the confrontation, officials from the Srijangram Revenue Circle, including the Circle Officer, along with police personnel, reached the spot to assess the situation.
The ownership and allotment status of the disputed land are yet to be established by the authorities, and further action is expected following verification of the relevant land records.
