Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 15 reacted to the Supreme Court of India staying the anticipatory bail granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera in an Assam FIR, asserting that “the law will take its course.”
Sarma said he was on a flight when the development took place but maintained that the Telangana High Court should not have granted transit bail to Khera. “For me, the Telangana Court cannot give transit bail to Pawan Khera because he is not a resident of Telangana. The Assam government moved the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court has stayed the bail. The law will take its course,” he said.
The Chief Minister also strongly countered Rahul Gandhi over his demand for a probe into allegations that Sarma’s wife holds multiple passports.
Responding sharply, Sarma said, “If I make 10 allegations against Rahul Gandhi, will he say the same thing? I will bring my passport and my wife’s passport before the public—can Rahul Gandhi do the same? Will he tell the country how many countries he has visited?”
He further added that Gandhi should exercise restraint in making public statements. “Before saying anything, Rahul Gandhi must understand that he is not God. Neither I nor my family has any golden visa,” Sarma said.
The remarks come amid an escalating political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over allegations made by Khera regarding Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, which have been denied by the Chief Minister and his family.
