Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 17 termed the Congress “immature,” saying the party should have addressed the reasons behind senior leaders choosing to leave instead of attempting to reverse their decisions through persuasion.
“Actually, they are immature. They should have addressed the reason. They feel that they will come to somebody’s house, Rahul will speak, people will change decision,” Sarma said, reacting to the political developments involving former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah.
Borah is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22, days after his high-profile meeting with the Chief Minister at his Ghoramara residence in Guwahati on February 17.
Sarma said that when a leader resigns after serving a party for more than three decades, there must be a “very serious reason” behind it. Instead of introspecting, he alleged, the Congress leadership assumes that personal intervention can change decisions.
Referring to a recent political yatra to Majuli, the Chief Minister claimed that including a “particular leader” in the programme signalled that the party was not serious about winning elections. He added that genuine Congress workers would feel pain if the organisation failed to correct its course.
Sarma also said that when he decided to join the BJP, he too received calls asking him to reconsider. However, he maintained that political decisions require structural correction, not personal appeals.
