A sense of shock and sorrow gripped passengers on the MV Bhagirathi on May 22, when a man identified as Golok Rajbongshi, a resident of Dahudi in Nalbari district, jumped into the Brahmaputra River, reportedly taking his own life. The incident occurred around 3:20 pm while the ferry was en route from Guwahati to Rajaduar in North Guwahati.
Rajbongshi, who appeared calm prior to the act, left behind a small bundle on the ferry deck containing a handwritten suicide note addressed to the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with a pair of sandals and Rs 300 in cash. His final message cited physical illness and emotional distress as the reasons behind his tragic decision.
In the emotionally charged note, Rajbongshi made two earnest appeals:
“Due to physical illness, I took this step. No one is to be blamed for this,” he wrote.
“I have only two requests for the Hon’ble Chief Minister. First, please ensure job placement for my only son. Second, do not instruct SDRF or NDRF to search for my body. Let me disappear into the horizon of the river.”
Eyewitnesses onboard the ferry were left stunned, unable to respond in time to prevent the act. Authorities were promptly informed, and search and rescue teams from the SDRF and NDRF were deployed to the site. However, as of the time of this report, Rajbongshi’s body remains untraced.
