Security arrangements at the District Election Office in Assam’s Dhubri district came under scrutiny on February 16 after a man entered the premises armed with a wooden club and vandalised property just days ahead of the Assembly elections.
The accused, identified as Abdul Rashid, a resident of Panbari in Dhubri, allegedly forced his way into the office of the District Election Officer and Returning Officer and began smashing glass panels and office fixtures. Witnesses said he moved swiftly towards workstations used for election-related processes.
Three computer systems used for poll management were damaged in the attack, along with several other office fittings. Officials said the destruction of equipment so close to polling has disrupted routine preparatory work and raised concerns over data security and physical safeguards at sensitive installations.
Police personnel from Dhubri Police reached the spot following an emergency call and detained Rashid on the premises. He was taken into custody for questioning.
Preliminary investigation indicates the act may have been politically motivated. During questioning, Rashid allegedly claimed he was protesting against the ongoing Special Revision and Disposal (SR&D) of electoral rolls. He reportedly accused authorities of manipulating voter lists and expressed anger over what he described as “crooked politics”.
Officials within the election department admitted that the incident has exposed vulnerabilities in security arrangements. Sources said a single individual was able to enter a restricted zone carrying a weapon and cause significant damage before being stopped.
A case is being registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for trespass, vandalism and obstruction of a public servant in discharge of duty. Police said CCTV footage is being examined to ascertain whether the accused acted alone or was influenced by any political group.
The incident has intensified calls for tighter security at election offices across the state as preparations for polling enter a critical phase.
