The Manipur government has decided to recruit 2,720 personnel in different categories of the Manipur Police Department to address the shortage of manpower in the state.
Speaking to the media after a Cabinet meeting, Manipur Government spokesperson and Heirok MLA Thokchom Radheshyam Singh said the Cabinet discussed four agendas, including the decision to undertake the recruitment drive. He said 5 per cent of the posts will be reserved for meritorious sportspersons, with the recruitment notification expected to be issued soon.
The government has also been focusing on employment generation amid concerns over unemployment in the state. Radheshyam Singh said the government had, on August 21, resolved to recruit 1,114 primary teachers under a centrally sponsored scheme. He added that recruitment to 742 posts across nine different categories is also pending.
On the ongoing blockade along a National Highway, which has reportedly turned violent in some instances and allegedly resulted in injuries to drivers, the government spokesperson said the authorities were in contact with those imposing the blockade in an effort to bring the situation to an end.
He appealed to all sections to refrain from violence, while acknowledging the right to democratic protest.
“Everyone has the right to raise democratic form of agitation. However, people should not indulge in violent activity,” he said.
