The Dhubri district administration on Tuesday carried out a massive eviction drive across Charuwa-Bakhra, Santoshpur, and Chirakuta, around 55 km from Dhubri town, clearing approximately 3,500 bighas of government land.
Heavy machinery, including bulldozers, was deployed to demolish residential structures, some of which had stood for decades. Many residents voluntarily dismantled their homes and shifted elsewhere ahead of the operation.
According to officials, over 2,000 families had been residing on the government khas land for several years. The eviction is part of the Assam government’s larger plan to transfer the land to the Adani Group for establishing a thermal power project, under the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).
In response to the displacement, government sources said each evicted family would receive a one-time financial aid of ₹50,000. Additionally, landless families are being considered for rehabilitation at Boyjer-Alga under the jurisdiction of the Athani Revenue Circle Officer.

Meanwhile, tension escalated at the eviction sites as angry locals blocked roads and staged protests. The situation turned volatile, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Superintendent of Police Leena Doley arrived at the scene and took direct charge, helping to restore order amid ongoing resistance.
In a related development, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, who attempted to visit the eviction site, was stopped by police and detained at Chapar Police Station. As per sources, after Akhil Gogoi's arrival situation has become volatile, where already most of the families were willing to shift from the eviction localities, but a section of people began the chaos.
Despite the administration's assurances, sporadic protests continued throughout the day, with displaced families demanding proper rehabilitation and compensation.
