The political atmosphere in Nagaon intensified on March 20 as two prominent leaders, MLA Rupak Sarma and BJP candidate Jitu Goswami, filed their nomination papers at the Nagaon District Commissioner’s office, accompanied by massive rallies of supporters.
Nagaon–Batadroba MLA Rupak Sarma submitted his nomination amid a large procession, claiming that around 20,000 to 25,000 supporters joined him in the show of strength. Speaking to reporters, Sarma made an allegation that during the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress candidate Durlabh Chamua had supported him in the electoral contest.
Meanwhile, BJP’s Barhampur candidate Jitu Goswami also filed his nomination on the same day, accompanied by thousands of party workers and supporters.
Addressing the media, Goswami described the upcoming Barhampur contest as a “battle between a guru and his disciple”, asserting that the disciple would emerge victorious.
In Barhampur, Goswami will face former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, who is contesting as a candidate of the Asom Gana Parishad.
Goswami has publicly acknowledged Gohain as his political mentor, adding a personal dimension to the high-profile electoral battle.
With both leaders demonstrating considerable support during nomination filing, the upcoming elections in the Nagaon and Barhampur constituencies are expected to witness keenly fought contests.
