Me-Dam-Me-Phi celebrated in Margherita, Girin Buragohain conferred ‘Gyati Mahiyan’ award

The traditional Tai Ahom festival Me-Dam-Me-Phi, observed in remembrance of forefathers, was celebrated on a community basis at Chao Cheng Ren premises in New Colony, Margherita, with former teacher and noted social worker Girin Buragohain being honoured with the prestigious “Gyati Mahiyan” award.
The two-day programme, organised by the Margherita Co-District Me-Dam-Me-Phi Celebration Committee, is held annually to uphold the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Tai Ahom community. The festival began on Saturday with traditional rituals and community participation.
On the second day, traditional puja and worship were performed in the morning, followed by the hoisting of flags. The main flag was hoisted by the president of the celebration committee, Mintu Deodhai Phukan, while other flags were hoisted by office bearers and distinguished guests.
A newly constructed Rangmancha (stage), built at a cost of Rs 23 lakh with funds allocated by Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, was inaugurated during the programme. A guest house, constructed at a cost of Rs 10 lakh from the MLA fund, was also inaugurated by Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Shanti Gogoi, and Girin Buragohain.
An open meeting was held in the afternoon, attended by several eminent personalities from the region. During the meeting, the “Gyati Mahiyan” award was conferred on Girin Buragohain of Jagun Phaneng in recognition of his contributions to education and social service.
In addition, ten distinguished individuals were specially felicitated for their service and dedication to society. The celebrations concluded with cultural pride and renewed commitment to preserving the traditions and legacy of the Tai Ahom community.
