With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) coming into effect ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, authorities have begun removing political flags, banners, posters and hoardings of party leaders from public places across Guwahati.
Officials of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), along with local administration teams, were seen taking down party symbols, posters and campaign materials from roadsides, electric poles and public infrastructure in several parts of the city on March 16.
The move is part of the Election Commission’s effort to ensure a level playing field for all political parties during the election period.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the Assam Assembly elections on March 15, after which the Model Code of Conduct came into immediate effect across the state.
The code regulates political campaigning and restricts the use of government machinery for electoral advantage.
As per the poll schedule, the official notification for the elections was issued on March 16, while the last date for filing nominations is March 23.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 24, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the results will determine the next government in the state.
Election officials said enforcement teams have been deployed across districts to monitor compliance with the Model Code of Conduct, including removal of unauthorised campaign materials from public spaces.
Authorities have urged political parties and supporters to follow election guidelines to ensure the conduct of free and fair polls.
