The political battle for Assam’s Barhampur constituency in Nagaon has taken an intriguing turn with the Congress and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) sealing a seat-sharing understanding.
The Congress has left the 59 No. Barhampur Assembly constituency to the AJP as part of its electoral arrangement. The move signals a strategic recalibration ahead of the polls, with regional and national forces recalibrating their equations on the ground.
Adding a dramatic twist to the contest is the possibility that former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Rajen Gohain may be fielded by the AJP from Barhampur. Though no official announcement has been made, political circles are abuzz with speculation that Gohain could re-enter the fray under the AJP banner.
For the first time since these developments surfaced, sitting Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami reacted to the possibility of facing his former political guide in the electoral arena.
“I extend my best wishes to him. He is my political mentor. It will be my first election contesting against my guru. If I get that opportunity, it will indeed be a good experience,” Goswami said.
