Polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency by-election was underway in Assam on Tuesday, October 6 with a voter turnout of 37.82 per cent recorded till 11 am. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal meanwhile alleged an electronic voting machine (EVM) malfunction at a polling station in Samaguri and said the machine was subsequently replaced.
Ajmal alleged that the EVM at polling station No. 185 (2) Bhatiakali in Samaguri constituency developed a delay in responding to the button associated with the AIUDF. According to him, while the other buttons on the machine were functioning normally, the AIUDF button took around 10 minutes to respond.
He said the matter was brought to the attention of the Nagaon district administration, following which the EVM was replaced with another machine.
Ajmal also expressed confidence about his electoral prospects, saying he was "100 per cent" certain of winning the bypoll.
According to turnout figures available till 11 am, Laharighat recorded the highest polling percentage among the eight Assembly segments at 42.49 per cent, followed by Samaguri at 40.39 per cent and Rupohihat at 39.62 per cent.
Dhing recorded 38.48 per cent turnout, while Jagiroad registered 37.06 per cent, Morigaon 37.25 per cent, Raha 34.35 per cent and Nagaon-Batadroba 30.54 per cent.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election was necessitated by the vacancy in the constituency and is being contested amid a multi-cornered electoral battle in Assam.
