Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the upcoming bridge over the Brahmaputra, connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi, will be named "Loh Purush Bishnuram Medhi Setu." The decision aims to commemorate the legacy of the former Chief Minister of Assam and Governor of Madras.
Speaking at an event in Hajo, a historic town northwest of Guwahati, Sarma stated, "We are constructing a new bridge over the Brahmaputra at Palashbari, Shialkuchi, and work has already started. We will name it after the Late Bishnuram Medhi."
Highlighting Medhi's contributions, Sarma noted, "Bishnuram Medhi is the treasure of national life. There are also the efforts of that great man behind the construction of the Saraighat Bridge and the Guwahati refinery."
The Chief Minister expressed his admiration for Medhi's life and work ethic, stating, "I am fascinated by the life of Bishnuram Medhi. His life inspires me because I am also trying to work hard day and night to complete the half-complete struggle that Bishnuram left behind."
Sarma emphasised the importance of Medhi's legacy for future generations, saying, "If the politics of Medhi can inspire the new generation in Assam, then till the last moment of our lives, like burning candles, we will be able to spread light instead of darkness to the world."
The bridge, once completed, is expected to improve connectivity in the region and serve as a tribute to one of Assam's most influential political figures.
