In a major crackdown on the drug trade, Dibrugarh Police carried out a large-scale anti-narcotics operation at the Harijan Colony near the Dibrugarh Town Railway Station, leading to the arrest of nine individuals and the seizure of suspected heroin, cash and gold ornaments.
Speaking to the media, Nayan Moni Baruah said the operation was part of an ongoing campaign against drug trafficking in the district under the supervision of the district police chief.
According to Baruah, police teams had been conducting raids at various locations across the district over the past week. Information gathered during those operations indicated that the source of the drugs was the Railway Colony area, locally known as "Koyla Patti."
Acting on the intelligence, police launched a surprise raid in the locality on Saturday. During the operation, nine persons were arrested and several houses were searched.
Police recovered approximately 79 grams of suspected heroin, ₹4.92 lakh in cash and a quantity of gold ornaments from the residence of a woman identified as Sujata Biswas.
Officials said further investigation is underway to establish the source and network of the drug trade operating in the area. Police are also verifying whether any of the accused are employees of the Indian Railways.
Baruah stated that if any individual involved is found to be a railway employee, the police will formally communicate with railway authorities and seek stringent departmental action against them.
The raid forms part of Assam Police's intensified efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the spread of narcotics in Upper Assam.
