No bullet wound: GMCH says Guwahati murder accused Ramanuj Goswami was brought dead after falling from Narakasur Hills

Guwahati murder accused Ramanuj Goswami died early Monday, September 14 after allegedly jumping from Narakasur Hills while he was being taken by police to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a blood test, police said. The hospital authorities said Goswami was brought to the casualty ward at around 3:41 am and was declared brought dead.

According to police, Goswami was being taken from Hatigaon towards GMCH through Kahilipara when he allegedly jumped from Narakasur Hills in an attempt to escape custody. Police said he was not shot and sustained fatal injuries after the fall. His body was subsequently taken to the GMCH morgue for postmortem examination.

GMCH Superintendent Dr Debjit Choudhury said Goswami was brought to the hospital by police as a road traffic accident victim.

"Today at dawn, at 03:41 am, a victim of a road traffic accident, named Ramanuj Goswami, was admitted to the casualty ward of GMCH by the police. He was brought dead. All immediate tests were performed as per protocol, including an ECG. Other details will be available only after a detailed postmortem," Choudhury said.

He added that Goswami's body had several tattoos, which were not clearly readable, and said there was no bullet wound as per the preliminary examination.

Goswami had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his wife, Riya Talukdar, at their residence in Guwahati's Basisthapur area.

Police said Riya was allegedly killed by Goswami following an altercation at their residence. The dispute was reportedly linked to Goswami's suspicion that she was involved in an extramarital relationship.

Riya's body was recovered from a flat named Anjali Griha on the third floor after her family alerted the police. Personnel from Hatigaon Police Station reached the spot and initiated an investigation.

Residents of the building told police that the couple frequently argued. Neighbours also reported hearing loud disturbances from the flat on Saturday, followed by what sounded like a woman crying.

According to residents, only Goswami's voice could be heard during the disturbance and he appeared frightened and distressed at the time.

Riya and Goswami had married around six months ago and were living together in the apartment. Goswami, who worked as an Uber driver, was originally from Gauripur.

The circumstances surrounding Goswami's death are expected to be established through the detailed postmortem examination and the ongoing police investigation.
