Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary on June 30 said no eviction drive would be carried out in the BTC region, assuring that 93 families allegedly occupying government land would instead be rehabilitated.
Speaking after a review meeting at Kajalgaon in Chirang district, Mohilary said the BTC administration would focus on rehabilitation rather than eviction.
"There will be no eviction in the BTC region. The government will make arrangements to rehabilitate the 93 affected families," he said.
The review meeting primarily assessed the functioning and progress of the Panchayat and Rural Development, Public Works Department (PWD) and Municipal Administration departments. Senior officials from the concerned departments attended the meeting and presented updates on the implementation of various government schemes and developmental projects.
Responding to questions on the proposed grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam, Mohilary said he had no objection to the move, provided it does not adversely affect the rights and benefits of communities that already enjoy ST status.
"It is a positive step, but the interests of the existing Scheduled Tribe communities must be protected while extending the status to new communities so that everyone benefits," he said.
Mohilary also made a light-hearted prediction about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying Argentina would reach the semi-finals with an impressive performance, but France would ultimately lift the trophy.
