Carrying the slogan “We fight, we win”, three-time Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed has launched his campaign in the newly formed Chamaria Assembly Constituency by inaugurating election offices across total 19 Gaon Panchayats. His wife, Noori Khan Ahmed, Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress, is actively accompanying him in the campaign trail. On Monday, the Congress candidate opened the main campaign office of the Uttar-Pub Bongaon Mandal Congress Committee for the upcoming April 9 Assembly elections.
Significantly, several residents of the Jambari area extended financial support to Ahmed, pledging assistance in his election campaign.
In his address, Ahmed highlighted that for the first time, parts of the 7 No. Uttar Pub Panchayat and Gumi-Bangkakata Panchayat from the erstwhile Chaygaon constituency, along with Phuturi Panchayat from Palashbari constituency, have been included in the newly carved Chamaria seat. He announced plans for an Adarsha College at Deosar, to be built on 150 bighas of land, specifically designed for differently-abled students — the only such institution in the North-East.
Declaring that he faces “no opponent” in this election, Ahmed remarked that while there was once a challenger, “this time there is no goalkeeper.” He dismissed social media campaigns questioning his local identity, asserting that the people of Chamaria know well who belongs to their soil. Reflecting on his 15-year tenure as MLA from Chaygaon, Ahmed recalled the developmental schemes implemented under his leadership.
On the other hand, AGP candidate Nurul Islam, representing the BJP-led alliance, claimed that women, youth, and men of Chamaria will vote for the alliance candidate, as government schemes and land pattas can only be secured by supporting the ruling coalition. Islam accused Ahmed of arrogance and predicted his defeat in the upcoming polls.
Meanwhile, AIUDF candidate Imdad Hussain stated that the election will be a contest between a local candidate and “outsider” Rakibuddin Ahmed, stressing that only a local representative can truly address the constituency’s problems
