The Gauhati High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea filed by Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with a case linked to allegations involving Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife.
Reacting to the court’s decision, BJP National Spokesperson Nalin Kohli said that Khera, being a senior political functionary, should have verified the authenticity of documents before making allegations. He stated that the documents cited by Khera did not meet the standard of credible evidence, prompting Sarma and his wife to file a First Information Report (FIR).
Kohli further alleged that the accusations were based on forged documents and termed them “scandalous,” particularly given that they were made during an ongoing electoral process. He added that Khera had exercised his legal option by seeking anticipatory bail, but the court, after hearing the matter, found no merit in his arguments.
“The judge considered the case from a legal standpoint rather than a political one and dismissed the application,” Kohli said, adding that Khera is now required to cooperate with the investigation.
The case stems from allegations made by Khera against the Assam Chief Minister and his wife, which were subsequently contested, leading to legal proceedings and the filing of an FIR.
