Residents of Assam's Hamukjaan village under the 83 No. Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district staged a protest on February 16, alleging prolonged neglect and lack of basic infrastructure in their area.
The villagers claimed that despite living in the area for generations, they continue to remain deprived of essential facilities such as proper roads, drainage and sanitation. They alleged that even after two terms, local BJP MLA Bhaskar Sharma has never visited their village.
According to the residents, neither their elected representative nor the current BJP-led government has ensured any visible development in Hamukjaan. They described the condition of village roads as extremely poor, stating that no concrete steps have been taken for proper road construction. The situation reportedly worsens during the rainy season, causing severe difficulties in daily commuting.
Expressing their frustration, villagers took to the streets and displayed posters with slogans such as “No Road, No Vote” and “Build Road First, Ask for Vote Later,” signalling their dissatisfaction ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The residents further alleged that while the government may intend to carry out development works, negligence and inaction by certain local leaders have hindered progress. They also raised questions regarding the role of Sukhdev Sharma, a resident of the village and president of the Margherita BJP Town Mandal, asking why their own village continues to face such neglect.
The villagers warned that if their grievances remain unaddressed, they would respond accordingly in the Assembly elections scheduled next month.
