One Dead, four injured as violent clash erupts in Assam’s Kokrajhar

One person was killed and four others sustained serious injuries following a violent clash between two groups at Gaurinagar in Karigaon area of Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday evening, January 19, police said.
The incident took place at around 7.30 pm, triggering panic and tension in the locality. The deceased has been identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, a resident of Bagaribari under Rupsi. According to preliminary information, the situation escalated rapidly after an altercation, culminating in violence that claimed one life.
Eyewitnesses and local sources said the clash turned volatile within a short span of time, during which a Scorpio vehicle was set on fire by miscreants. The burning of the vehicle further aggravated the situation, drawing large crowds and creating fear among residents of the area.
Four people were seriously injured in the incident. They have been identified as Mahesh Murmu and Sunil Murmu, both residents of Karigaon, and Jugiraj Brahma of Anthaigaon. All the injured were rushed to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Hospital sources said their condition is being closely monitored.
Preliminary reports suggest that the violence may have been triggered by a road accident. It is suspected that the Scorpio vehicle was involved in hitting two individuals, following which tensions flared and the situation spiralled out of control. However, police officials said the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the clash are yet to be clearly established.
Police personnel reached the spot soon after receiving information and brought the situation under control. Security has been tightened in and around the area to prevent any further escalation. Senior police officials said an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident and identify those involved in the violence.
As of the time of filing this report, the situation in Gaurinagar remained tense but under control, with police maintaining a strong presence to ensure law and order.
