BJP leader Kamal Kumar Medhi on Wednesday, February 25, questioned the cohesion of opposition forces, alleging a “visible lack of unity” and raising pointed concerns over seat-sharing demands within the alliance framework.
Addressing party workers and local leaders in the Bajali constituency, Medhi said recent developments have exposed cracks within opposition ranks. “We are witnessing a clear absence of unity among opposition parties,” he asserted, suggesting that conflicting claims over constituencies reveal deeper strategic discord.
On the issue of seat-sharing with alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Medhi addressed reports that the party is seeking the Barpeta, Bajali and Bhabanipur-Sarbhog constituencies. Questioning the rationale behind such demands, he remarked, “If the AGP wants Barpeta, Bajali and Bhabanipur-Sarbhog, then what are we supposed to seek? If every constituency is allotted to the AGP, where will the BJP contest?”
Medhi emphasized reciprocity. “Since we are in an alliance, the AGP should support the BJP here,” he said, indicating that cooperation must be mutual rather than unilateral.
On the Bajali constituency specifically, Medhi sought to project internal discipline within the BJP. He noted that eight aspirants are vying for the party ticket in Bajali and made it clear that the party unit stands united behind the central leadership’s decision. “Whoever the party nominates, we are in agreement,” he stated, in an apparent effort to contrast BJP’s internal cohesion with what he described as opposition disunity.
Medhi further alleged that the opposition has sidelined both the people and party workers in its political manoeuvring. According to him, this approach demonstrates that claims of unity are superficial and lack substantive coordination on the ground.
With elections approaching, the spotlight now turns to how alliance partners navigate competing claims while maintaining a united public front. Medhi’s intervention has not only sharpened the discourse around seat sharing but also placed opposition unity under renewed scrutiny.
