Authorities in East Karbi Anglong district have launched a major eviction operation targeting encroachers on 350 bighas of government irrigation land in the Bakulia area, affecting more than 2,000 families residing in over 750 houses.
The drive, which commenced in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has proceeded peacefully, with many residents having already vacated the land following prior eviction notices issued by authorities.
The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is overseeing the operation, which aims to reclaim government land designated for irrigation purposes that has been encroached upon over time.
Officials report that a significant number of settlers had voluntarily cleared their occupied portions ahead of the scheduled eviction, contributing to the orderly conduct of the exercise.
More than 500 police personnel have been deployed at the site to maintain law and order during the operation. The security contingent includes forces from both Karbi Anglong and East Karbi Anglong districts, with the Superintendent of Police directly monitoring the situation.
Local authorities emphasised that residents had been informed well in advance through official eviction notices, allowing them time to make alternative arrangements. The cooperative response from many families has enabled the operation to proceed without incident thus far.
The eviction represents one of the larger land reclamation drives undertaken by the district administration in recent times, highlighting ongoing efforts to clear encroachments from government land earmarked for public purposes.
