Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 4 launched a sharp attack on Asaduddin Owaisi, alleging that his campaign rhetoric during his visit to back the AIUDF is aimed at “weaponising the Miya community” for political gains, while accusing the Congress of remaining silent on such remarks.
Sarma claimed that Congress has “brought Owaisi” into Assam to influence electoral dynamics and polarise voters along religious lines. He further alleged that speeches delivered by Owaisi indicate attempts to mobilise specific sections of the population.
Targeting the Congress, the Chief Minister said the party has failed to criticise such statements and remained silent on controversial remarks and incidents involving figures like Yunus Tamuli and Yunus Ali.
Reiterating his electoral confidence, Sarma said the BJP is poised to win 90–100 seats and may even cross the 100-mark. “We got 96 seats earlier, this time we will add four more,” he said.
Referring to Khowang constituency, he expressed confidence that BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi will secure a massive victory, citing strong public response during his recent visit.
Sarma also criticised Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that he has not been actively working for Jorhat over the past two years.
On the killing of a BJP leader in Sonari, the Chief Minister said it is too early to link the incident to elections, adding that clarity will emerge only after a proper investigation.
He maintained that the BJP’s governance record and grassroots outreach have strengthened its position ahead of the polls.
