AIUDF chief and Binnakandi Assembly constituency MLA Badruddin Ajmal on July 13 launched a sharp attack on the proposed recommendation of a parliamentary panel to suspend, instead of remove, Prime Minister and Chief Ministers if they remain in judicial custody for 30 days, calling it an exercise that would not hold politicians accountable.
Reacting to the proposal, Ajmal questioned the intent behind the move and alleged that lawmakers would never enact laws that could be used against themselves.
"Who will punish whom? Tomorrow the punishment will fall on the same people who imparted the punishment," Ajmal said.
Claiming that the political system protects itself, he added, "All of them are thieves. No one will hang anyone. No one will make laws against anyone. This is a business of fooling people."
The AIUDF leader also alleged that a large number of lawmakers face criminal cases.
"How many criminals are there in our Parliament today? More than 65 per cent of people are criminals," he claimed.
Ajmal also criticised the BJP over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that the party was using the issue for electoral gains.
"The BJP government will implement the UCC wherever it is in power. But nothing is going to happen," he said.
Linking the issue to upcoming elections, Ajmal claimed, "There are elections ahead. UP elections are upcoming. So they are bringing this because they need Hindu votes."
His remarks come amid political debate over the parliamentary panel's recommendations on the removal and suspension of constitutional functionaries facing prolonged judicial custody and renewed discussions on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in BJP-ruled states.
