Raijor Dal chief and MLA Akhil Gogoi on May 22, criticised the BJP-led government over the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying the focus should instead be on addressing rising prices and the hardships faced by people in Assam.
Speaking to reporters at the Assam Legislative Assembly during the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MLAs, Gogoi said the State was going through a crucial period marked by inflation and economic distress.
“This is the most crucial time for the people of Assam. We are facing price rise of essential goods and a major crisis,” he said.
The Raijor Dal leader alleged that the government was moving in the wrong direction by attempting to introduce what he termed a “controversial” Uniform Civil Code bill.
“I think this is not the right time to table the UCC. This is the time to decide how the people of Assam can get relief from price rise and the ongoing crisis,” he said.
Gogoi further said that Raijor Dal would raise public issues strongly inside the Assembly.
Highlighting the party’s improved representation, he said Raijor Dal now has two MLAs in the Assembly, compared to one in the previous term.
“Last time I was the only MLA from Raijor Dal. This time we have two MLAs and we will try our best to provide relief to the people of Assam,” he added.
