All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal on July 6 called for a stronger opposition alliance under the INDIA bloc, asserting that opposition parties should not be intimidated by the BJP and expressing confidence that political challenges would eventually reach Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Ajmal said, "Eventually, it will be PM Modi's turn. People will break him too. We should not be afraid."
The AIUDF chief stressed the need for greater unity within the opposition, saying the INDIA alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi, must remain strong to effectively take on the BJP.
"We should not be afraid. The INDIA alliance—the coalition Rahul Gandhi is leading—needs to be strong," Ajmal said.
Commenting on the political situation in West Bengal, Ajmal suggested that the opposition alliance could have avoided internal competition during elections.
"If Rahul Gandhi hadn't contested in Bengal, perhaps Mamata Banerjee wouldn't be in this condition; when there is an alliance, one shouldn't go there," he said, apparently referring to electoral coordination among INDIA bloc partners.
Ajmal's remarks come amid continuing discussions within the opposition over strengthening coordination among alliance partners ahead of future elections.
