The movement of goods-laden trucks on the Assam–Manipur border resumed on July 7 under police escort after hundreds of vehicles remained stranded for several days due to security concerns.
According to reports, trucks carrying food grains, daily essentials and other supplies from different states had been stuck along the Assam–Manipur border road, leading to long queues of vehicles and disrupting the supply chain to Manipur.
Truck drivers and helpers alleged that they had been stranded for days without adequate access to food, clean drinking water or medical facilities. Many were reportedly forced to rely on water from nearby hill streams for survival, raising concerns over health and hygiene.
The prolonged disruption also resulted in perishable food items and other goods deteriorating inside the parked vehicles, while transporters and traders incurred financial losses due to delays in deliveries. Drivers said the uncertainty had also taken a mental and economic toll on those stranded.
The truck drivers and helpers appealed to the authorities to restore normalcy at the earliest and provide immediate relief, including food, safe drinking water, medical assistance and other essential services for those affected.
Observers warned that the continued disruption at the border could adversely affect the transportation network as well as the supply of essential commodities to Manipur.
In a significant development, authorities on Monday morning began allowing goods-laden trucks to proceed towards Manipur under police protection to ensure their safe passage and prevent any attacks or damage to the vehicles during transit.
