A police patrol vehicle allegedly crashed into a parked car and damaged an electric pole in the early hours of the morning, June 23, prompting allegations of negligence and possible intoxication against the personnel on board.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m., when a loud noise alarmed residents of the locality. Many initially suspected a transformer explosion before discovering that a police-marked Bolero vehicle had been involved in a road accident.
According to Tuhina Sharma, whose car was damaged in the incident, the patrol vehicle rammed into her car while it was parked outside the gate of her residence. The impact allegedly pushed the vehicle nearly 200 metres before it collided with an electric pole. The pole was split into two, while the rear portion of the car sustained extensive damage.
Sharma said that two police personnel, including the driver, were present in the vehicle at the time of the accident. When questioned, they reportedly stated that the accident occurred while they were attempting to apprehend two suspected thieves during a patrol.
She further alleged that before colliding with her vehicle, the Bolero had struck a motorcycle and pushed it into a nearby house.
Sharma claimed that the driver failed to produce a valid driving licence and that the personnel present could not satisfactorily explain the circumstances leading to the accident.
Traffic police arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later. Sharma said she requested the authorities to take suo motu cognisance of the incident and initiate appropriate proceedings. She also indicated that she would seek compensation for the damage caused to her vehicle.
The lawyer further alleged that a subsequent check of the patrol vehicle's details through an online portal revealed irregularities in its documentation. She claimed that the vehicle lacked valid papers and that details of the driver's licence could not be verified.
Sharma also questioned the condition of the police personnel present at the scene, alleging that their behaviour appeared abnormal and raising concerns that they may have been under the influence of intoxicants. She called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter.
The allegations have been brought to the notice of the district Superintendent of Police and other authorities. Sharma has demanded action against those found responsible and urged the police department to ensure that all patrol vehicles are properly documented and operated in accordance with the law.
