The family of Ramanuj Goswami, who died after allegedly jumping from a moving police vehicle while being taken for a medical examination, will receive his body, his family members said.
According to the family, Goswami’s last rites will be performed at the Gauripur crematorium.
Goswami’s father said he had been informed by Hatigaon Police Station OC Brahma that Ramanuj had died after falling from the roof of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
However, police had earlier said that Goswami, who was in police custody in connection with the alleged murder of his wife, had jumped from the moving police vehicle while being taken to GMCH for a medical examination. Police said he sustained severe injuries and was subsequently declared dead at the hospital.
Goswami’s father said he does not believe that his son, who had surrendered before the authorities, would have taken such a step.
He also said he would have the body examined to determine whether there were any marks that could indicate a gunshot injury.
The father further recalled that Ramanuj had earlier been reported to have suffered from a poor mental state and that he had told a media organisation about not taking custody of him at the time.
The family is now awaiting the completion of the required legal and post-mortem formalities before taking possession of the body.
