Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, November 23 reiterated the government’s firm stance on issues related to alleged illegal activities and polygamy, stating that action will continue irrespective of community.
Speaking to the media, Sarma clarified that concerns over multiple marriages are not confined to any single group. “I am not saying the only target is the Miya community. Even among Hindus, there are instances where men marry twice. We receive many such complaints where the first wife suffers. This happens across communities, so we cannot say it is only the Miyas, although the numbers are higher in that group,” he said.
The Chief Minister asserted that his administration would continue its measures against what he termed “illegal or suspicious Miyas,” adding that eviction operations and steps to curb polygamy would move forward under his leadership.
“Eviction drives will continue, polygamy will end. Nobody can stop me,” Sarma said, reaffirming his government’s commitment to implementing strict legal and administrative action.
Speaking on Congress fighting for the upcoming assembly elections from key constituencies, CM Sarma said, "Congress will contest elections in 22 constituencies and collect money from its candidates. Congress candidates must pay Rs 1 crore in advance and Rs 3 crore later. The party has started taking money from candidates in Miya-dominated constituencies. Congress no longer has any base or support in Assam".
