Public anger erupted in Sivasagar after residents alleged that a road construction company attempted to install a divider at Poonjan Chariali as part of an ongoing four-lane road project, a move locals claim would severely affect connectivity for several residential areas.
Residents from at least six localities — including Poonjan, Gaurav Nagar, Basanta Dutta Path, Seuj Path and Paschim Jamuna Road — staged protests on the roadside, alleging that the construction plan would effectively isolate their areas and create major inconvenience for commuters.
According to the protesters, the installation of a divider in the middle of the Poonjan Chariali junction would split the road into two sections, forcing residents to travel nearly two extra kilometres to access Sivasagar town and other nearby areas for daily and emergency needs.
Locals also expressed concern that emergency response vehicles such as ambulances and fire tenders could face delays in reaching affected areas during critical situations if the divider is constructed.
The issue triggered strong resentment among residents, who accused the construction agency of ignoring the practical difficulties and safety concerns of the local population.
A large number of people came out onto the streets demanding immediate intervention and reconsideration of the proposed road design.
