Resentment is mounting among residents of Assam’s Morigaon district after allegations of substandard road construction surfaced under the Jagiroad Assembly constituency, with locals accusing authorities of misusing public funds by carrying out superficial repair work instead of proper reconstruction.
The controversy centres on the road stretch connecting Chikabari to Karati Pam, where residents claim that despite being projected as a new construction project, the work has been limited to merely dumping stones and sand over the existing, severely damaged road surface. Locals allege that no scientific or systematic reconstruction process has been followed.
According to residents, the old and weakened base layer of the road was left intact, raising serious concerns about the structural strength, safety, and long-term durability of the stretch. They warned that such makeshift work could result in rapid deterioration, especially during the monsoon season, posing risks to daily commuters.
Expressing deep dissatisfaction, locals alleged that the project reflects large-scale misuse of government funds, with public money being spent without ensuring quality or accountability. Several residents questioned how such work could pass official inspection when the road’s foundation itself remains unrepaired.
The aggrieved residents have now urged the government and concerned departments to intervene immediately and ensure that the road is reconstructed properly, following established engineering standards, rather than resorting to temporary fixes that fail to serve public interest.
