A late-night robbery attempt at the residence of a businessman in Assam’s tea belt was foiled after the homeowner raised an alarm, forcing the suspects to flee.
Police said a three-member gang targeted the home of Rajulal Todi at Dehing Tea Estate under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district around 2 am on January 4. The family was asleep when the intruders forced their way in, ransacked furniture and scattered belongings across the house.
The suspects made off with about Rs 10,000 in cash kept from a shop, along with a few items, before attempting to steal a vehicle parked outside. The attempt alerted the homeowner, who raised a commotion. With their faces covered, the gang escaped before residents could intervene.
The incident was reported to Margherita Police Station by the local village defence party in the morning. A police team visited the spot and began an investigation.
Pranjal Baraik, a leader of the Assam Tea Tribes Student Association, who was present at the site, urged the administration to identify and arrest the culprits, citing concerns over the safety of lives and livelihoods in the area.
