The spirit of Rongali Bihu has come alive in Jorhat as the Assamese New Year celebrations began with the observance of Goru Bihu across the district.
Known for its deep-rooted cultural heritage, Jorhat witnessed vibrant scenes on the eve of Bohag Bihu, with people gathering near rivers and ponds to carry out traditional rituals dedicated to cattle.
In keeping with age-old customs, cows and calves were bathed with turmeric-infused water, accompanied by the beats of dhol and traditional Bihu songs.
Goru Bihu, an integral part of the Bihu festivities, is observed as a mark of respect and gratitude towards cattle, which play a vital role in agrarian life. Locals also fed their cattle a variety of vegetables, symbolising care and reverence.
Cultural activities have also picked up momentum across Jorhat, with schools and local organisations hosting Bihu dance and song programmes. Children dressed in traditional attire were seen enthusiastically participating, reflecting efforts to preserve and promote Assamese traditions among the younger generation.

Markets in the city are bustling with activity, with a surge in demand for traditional food items such as chira, muri, jaggery, sesame seeds, milk, and curd. The festive rush has added to the vibrant atmosphere in the lead-up to the main Bihu celebrations.
According to local beliefs, just as Lord Ganesha is worshipped before any auspicious occasion, Assamese households begin Rangali Bihu by honouring cattle through Goru Bihu.
With music, rituals, and community participation, Rangali Bihu in Jorhat has once again underscored the district’s rich cultural legacy, ushering in the New Year with renewed joy, unity, and hope.
