An incident of alleged banking lapse has triggered concern among customers after it emerged that deposited money is not entirely safe, even in banks.
The incident took place at the Abhayapuri branch of Assam Gramin Bank in Bongaigaon district.
The affected customer, Bulu Das, a resident of Ward No. 2 in Abhayapuri and an account holder of the Assam Gramin Bank’s Abhayapuri branch, received a message on his mobile phone on January 30 informing him that Rs 8,000 had been withdrawn from his account.
Shocked by the transaction, as he had not made any such withdrawal, Das immediately contacted the bank authorities.
Upon inquiry, the bank informed him that the amount of Rs 8,000 had been withdrawn from his account by another customer through a cheque. Following a complaint lodged by Bulu Das, the bank authorities conducted an internal verification and admitted that an error had occurred.
Subsequently, the bank redeposited the withdrawn amount of Rs 8,000 into Das’s account.
After the incident came to light, concerns have grown among customers regarding the safety and security of their deposits.
The episode has raised serious questions about banking procedures and internal checks at the branch, leaving account holders anxious about the protection of their hard-earned money.
