A private school in Assam's Nagaon district was completely destroyed in a late-night fire that broke out at Kachkhaiti under Rupahi Hat, causing the loss of school property, records and supplies worth several lakh rupees.
The blaze engulfed Modern Adarsha Senior Secondary School at around 11 pm on Saturday, May 30, with local residents suspecting that an electrical fault or short circuit may have triggered the fire.
The flames spread rapidly through the premises, reducing the institution to ashes within a short time.
Residents rushed to the scene and attempted to contain the fire, but were unable to stop it from spreading. Fire tenders from Sonaribali and Ambagan fire stations later arrived and carried out firefighting operations. However, the school had already been gutted by the time the blaze was brought under control.
School authorities suffered heavy losses as furniture, educational materials and important documents were destroyed in the incident. No casualties were reported.
The fire has sparked concern across the area, with residents of Rupahi, Lailuri, Kawaimari and neighbouring villages calling for the establishment of fire stations closer to the region.
Locals said the absence of nearby firefighting infrastructure often delays emergency response during major incidents.
