The second body recovered from Assam's Umrangso coal mine has been identified as Ligen Magar, a resident of Umrangshu, Dima Hasao, Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the identity on his official social media handle on January 11.
"The identity of the recovered body has been confirmed as Ligen Magar, aged approximately 27 years, a resident of 1 No. Umrangshu, Dima Hasao, Assam," CM Sarma stated on X.
Meanwhile, rescue efforts continue at the site, with forces continuing their desperate search for the remaining seven miners. Speaking to ANI, Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, Team Commander of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said, "We check the water level every morning. And when we were doing that, we saw a body floating. So we took it out at around 7:30 am. The water level has been reduced by 6 metres. 5 pumps were working overnight... The operation is going on 24 hours."
The second body was recovered at the site early morning today, January 11, bringing the death toll to two.
Following the development, forces at the site will now ramp up efforts to rescue the remaining trapped miners.
On X, the Assam chief minister extended condolences, stating, "Rescue efforts in Umrangsu continue with unwavering resolve. Tragically, another body was recovered this morning, with the identity yet to be confirmed. Our hearts go out to the grieving, as we hold onto hope and strength in this difficult time."
Earlier, on January 8, Army divers from the 21 Para Special Forces recovered one body from the flooded coal mine. The individual was identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestho, a resident of Udayapur district, Nepal.
