Assam Police have detained self-styled leader Yunus Tamuli for making derogatory and distorted remarks against the Assamese community and its history on social media.
Tamuli was apprehended last night by Hojai police based on an FIR lodged by the Sivasagar district unit of the National Sainik Sena, Assam.
Early this morning, he was handed over to Sivasagar police custody.
Locally infamous as a “dalal” (broker), Tamuli already had multiple cases registered against him at the Sivasagar police station in the past. Known for exploiting people across different places, he had recently floated an organisation called Bagh Sena in the name of protecting “suspected citizens,” projecting himself as a self-proclaimed leader.
Earlier, Tamuli had also founded another group under the name Gau Raksha Samiti, during which he was accused of being involved with cattle syndicates and collecting illegal money at the Koliapani market in Jorhat district.
Following his latest arrest, several organisations including the National Sainik Sena, Ahom Sena, and the Scheduled Caste Students’ Union have reacted sharply against him in Sivasagar.
Police have said that details of the legal charges under which Tamuli will be booked will be known in due course.
