Tension gripped Kokrajhar town on July 14 after a woman employee accused the owner of a clothing and accessories store of sexually assaulting her, triggering massive protests that culminated in vandalism at the establishment.
The incident took place at Little Sarojini Nagar, a clothing and fashion accessories store located at Kadamtola in Kokrajhar.
According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Amratanch Rajtogi, a businessman from Rajasthan, had allegedly been sexually abusing a young woman employee for a prolonged period.
Following the allegations, local residents and members of various organisations staged a protest outside the store, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The demonstration soon turned violent, with some protesters allegedly vandalising the shop, damaging merchandise and throwing clothes and accessories onto the streets.
The victim has lodged a formal complaint at Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, accusing Rajtogi of sexual assault.
Police have launched an investigation into the allegations. However, the accused businessman is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the town, with protesters demanding swift police action and justice for the victim.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the progress of the investigation.
