Campaigning for the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections ended on October 1, with candidates across political parties making a final push to woo voters and seeking their support ahead of polling.
However, as candidates reached out to voters promising better civic amenities and improved infrastructure, heavy rain once again brought Silchar's persistent waterlogging problem into focus.
Several major roads in the city were inundated following the rain, leaving commuters and residents struggling with waterlogged streets. The situation has once again raised questions over the city's drainage and water management system.
Waterlogging has been a recurring issue in Silchar, with political leaders repeatedly promising a permanent solution during elections.
From Assembly and Lok Sabha elections to the civic polls, the problem has featured prominently in political campaigns, with successive leaders assuring residents that measures would be taken to prevent roads and neighbourhoods from being submerged during heavy rain.
Yet, for residents, the promises have continued to remain largely unfulfilled as large stretches of the city face waterlogging whenever there is heavy rainfall.
With the civic election campaign now over, the question for Silchar voters is whether the newly elected municipal representatives will be able to address one of the city's most persistent civic problems.
