Silchar is all set to hold its first-ever Municipal Corporation election on Saturday, with polling personnel leaving for their respective polling stations with election materials on October 2.
Polling staff collected their election materials from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) and Inter-State Truck Terminus (ISTT), where strong rooms have also been set up for the civic polls.
The election will be held across 40 wards, with 303 polling stations set up across Silchar. A total of 1,212 polling personnel have been deployed for the election, including 10 all-women polling stations.
Authorities have put in place elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful polling.
The polling stations have been categorised as sensitive and highly sensitive. Armed police personnel have been deployed at highly sensitive polling stations, officials said.
A Quick Response Team will also keep round-the-clock surveillance across the city to respond to any untoward situation and ensure that voters do not face any difficulties.
Cachar District Magistrate Rahul Kumar Gupta and Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das briefed the media about the arrangements ahead of the polling.
Silchar residents will cast their votes on Saturday to elect the city's first municipal corporation.
