The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has recorded the statements of his wife Garima Saikia Garg and sister Palmee Borthakur, confirmed investigating officer Moramee Das on Saturday, October 4.
Speaking to the media, Das stated, “I recorded the statements of Garima Saikia Garg and Palmee Borthakur today. I can’t comment further at this moment because the investigation is still ongoing.”
The investigation follows Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise in Singapore on September 19, where he reportedly drowned while swimming in the sea. The singer had travelled to the Southeast Asian nation to participate in the 4th edition of the North East India Festival, an event organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.
In the wake of the incident, the Assam CID took over the probe after more than 60 FIRs were filed across the state, naming Mahanta and about ten others, including Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta.
Authorities have since arrested the festival organiser, Garg’s manager, and the two band members. All four have been remanded to 14 days of police custody as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the beloved singer’s death.
The SIT continues to gather evidence and record witness statements to ascertain the events leading up to Garg’s tragic passing.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Assam has constituted a One-Man Commission of Inquiry, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
Issued on October 3, the notification under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, outlines the commission’s terms of reference, which include examining the sequence of events before and after Garg’s death, identifying any lapses or negligence by individuals or authorities, and investigating the possibility of external factors, foul play, or conspiracy.
