A severe storm that struck the Dokmoka area in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on March 11, Wednesday night, caused major disruption after a large roadside hoarding collapsed onto National Highway 29, blocking traffic for several hours.
Strong winds brought down the massive hoarding erected along the highway, causing it to fall directly onto the road and obstruct vehicular movement. The sudden incident led to chaos and a severe traffic jam in the area.
The situation worsened as a large number of vehicles were returning from Diphu, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had addressed a public gathering earlier in the day. Many attendees travelling back via NH-29 were caught in the congestion, resulting in a long line of stranded vehicles.
Local police and authorities rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. Teams worked to manage the traffic situation and arranged for the removal of the fallen hoarding to clear the road.
For some time, vehicular movement along NH-29 in the Dokmoka region came to a near standstill, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. However, the collapse has once again raised concerns about the safety of roadside structures during severe weather conditions.
