Protests erupted in Sivasagar on April 13 as members of the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) staged a strong demonstration against recent incidents of alleged attacks on Assamese people by non-Assamese individuals in different parts of the state.
The protest was held at Doulmukh Chariali ahead of Bohag Bihu, where demonstrators raised slogans condemning what they termed as “hooliganism” by outsiders.
Led by ATASU central president Basanta Gogoi, hundreds of members and supporters participated in the protest, shouting slogans such as “No to outsider aggression,” “ATASU Zindabad,” and demanding an end to what they described as intimidation by non-locals.
Gogoi warned that stronger agitation would be launched in the coming days if such incidents continue, particularly during the festive period of Bihu, which holds deep cultural significance in Assam.
